Electrical Work In Industrial Premises

Industrial buildings bring together machinery, distribution equipment and working conditions that need a different approach from an ordinary office. Dust, heat, vibration, moisture and vehicle movements can all influence how an electrical system should be designed and maintained. Our starting point is the process your building supports and the risks around it.

Typical enquiries involve three-phase supplies, new machinery connections, distribution changes and local isolation. The exact scope must identify the supply characteristics and the equipment manufacturer’s requirements. A machine’s rated power alone does not provide everything needed to design its connection.

We work from an agreed boundary between the building installation and the machine or production line. Internal machine wiring, control modifications, specialist commissioning and high-voltage work need separately confirmed competence and responsibility. We do not treat these as automatic additions to a general electrical installation package.

When An Industrial Electrician Is Needed

Plan an assessment before installing a replacement machine, rearranging production or converting a warehouse to a new use. Repeated trips, damaged containment or signs of overheating also need investigation. Never repeatedly reset a protective device or bypass an interlock to keep a process running.

For a new supply, provide the machinery data sheet, starting method, load information and proposed position. Photographs of closed distribution equipment and existing circuit schedules can help establish the survey requirements. Do not open panels or approach exposed conductors to gather information for an enquiry.

Regulations And Safe Isolation

The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 apply to electrical systems used at work. BS 7671 provides the technical framework for the building installation. Where work equipment is involved, the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, known as PUWER, also place duties on those who provide and use it.

Electrical isolation alone may not remove every hazard from a machine. Stored pressure, mechanical movement and other energy sources need consideration in the safe system of work. Read the HSE overview of PUWER for the wider equipment duties.

How An Industrial Project Is Planned

First, we establish the purpose of the work, the site conditions and the equipment involved. Existing drawings, maintenance reports and manufacturer information are reviewed against what is on site. The survey identifies supply capacity questions, distribution arrangements and access requirements that affect the proposed work.

Next, the design and method are agreed with the responsible site contact. This includes isolation boundaries, lock-off arrangements, permits and the sequence for taking equipment out of service. Any requirement for a machinery specialist or the electricity network operator should be identified before installation begins.

The work is then carried out within the agreed scope, followed by the relevant verification and documentation. Recommissioning needs a controlled handback with the people responsible for the process. A completed electrical connection does not by itself confirm that an altered machine is safe for every operating mode.

Cost Factors For Industrial Work

The quotation depends on load, cable length, containment, protective devices, environment and the condition of the existing installation. Access at height and production restrictions can change the method and time needed. Compatibility with existing switchgear must be checked rather than inferred from an empty way in a board.

Other costs may include specialist access, shutdown attendance, manufacturer support and enabling work. These should be named in the scope so that responsibilities are clear. We need site and equipment information before discussing a meaningful quotation, particularly when an upgrade could affect the incoming supply.

A Useful Maintenance Handover

Retain revised circuit schedules, test documentation and information about local isolators after the project. Give the maintenance team a record of anything disconnected, changed or left outside the work boundary. Clear identification matters when a later fault has to be traced without disrupting an unrelated part of the building.

For planned condition assessment of the building installation, our fixed wire testing service can help define an inspection programme. The inspection scope should distinguish fixed wiring from machine internals and any specialist systems. Tell us about restricted production windows when making your enquiry.

Industrial Electrician FAQs

Can You Help With Three-Phase Machinery Supplies?

Three-phase machinery supplies can be assessed as part of an industrial electrical scope. Send the machine data sheet, location and details of the existing distribution equipment. Supply capacity, protective devices, starting characteristics and isolation need checking before a connection is specified, with machine commissioning responsibilities agreed separately.

Can Production Continue During Industrial Electrical Work?

Industrial electrical work may require production to stop where equipment must be isolated or access cannot be safely separated. Some projects can be divided into stages. Tell us about critical processes and available shutdown windows so the proposed method can address both safety and the practical effects on your operation.
